The Restoration of The Eagle

The Restoration of The Eagle

Your Brother would like to take a moment of your valuable time to share with you a little bit about the nature of the The Eagle.

Some times a perfectly healthy eagle will become grounded for no apparent reason. It’s not natural for a eagle to stay on the ground. These birds were born for the air. To sore high in the heavens.

However, and sadly some times a perfectly healthy, good eagle will become grounded.

What happens when a eagle becomes grounded you may ask.

Well, for one Eagles are not Yard Birds like Chickens their Talons or feet will start to crack and bleed. They become crippled and just wallow on the ground. Their talons are made to grab game while air born and not to walk around on the ground like a chicken.

They stop flying so when the rains and storms come they are subject to the elements which in turn destroys their feathers.

They stop eating and a over growth starts to form over their beak.

Their eyes start developing cataract type growths and they become blind and can’t see.

They are a pitiful sight and don’t even resemble a eagle as we know it.

The poor eagle will die in such conditions.

However, what will happen is a Strong Healthy Eagle will capture fresh game and drop the fresh meat to the grounded eagle.

When that happens most of the grounded eagles will be afraid and hide and end up starving to death.

However, if One of those grounded eagles makes it to the fresh game and receives it’s nourishment it has a chance.

Once it receives the strength the First thing it must do in order to keep living is to Make it to it’s Rock.

A Eagle has only One Rock that they will live and die on. It will not roost or nest on another eagles rock. So he has to make it back to His Rock.

Now remember, it can’t walk, it can’t fly and it can’t see. The odds for that eagle living is against him greatly.

So it starts on it’s hard and grueling journey making it back to it’s Rock. It will craw and struggle every inch of the way till it makes it and if it does not make it, it will surely die.

But say by the help of his Creator it does make the difficult journey then it has a very good chance of Living.

The very first thing it does is start dashing it’s beak against His Rock to remove the callous over growth of it’s beak.

Also, it will start plucking out the damage feathers and a Restoring of fathers start forming.

The Eagle will look into the sun and tears start forming in it’s eyes and it’s vision becomes Restored as well.

It’s talons heal and becomes Restored and once The Eagle is fully Restored what do you think is the first thing it will do?

Well, I’m glad you asked…

The first thing it does is go and capture Fresh Meat and take it to the other Eagles that have become grounded and drops them the Fresh Meat and gives out a Eagle Screech to them as saying…

“Take Meat….Receive Restoration …and make it to Your Rock.”

With what I’ve just shared with you, you yourself may feel much like that very Eagle…

You may have soared the heavens and thought, “Nothing can touch me… I will never be grounded” But for what ever reason it happen.

You can’t seem to be able to eat on the Word of YAH…

You can’t see a brighter tomorrow because you have lost your vision.

You may feel you can’t take another step and just want to hide under a bush and give up.

But today I want to drop you a Fresh Word from Heaven… Fresh Meat from Above…. YAHUSHA loves You. He does care and He is waiting for You to make it to Your Rock.

—————

YAHUAH lives; and blessed be my Rock; and exalted be the ELOHAI of the Rock of my salvation.

SHEMU’EL SHENIY (2 SAMUEL) 22:47

————

With the callousness that has form in your life it may have become difficult to Eat or receive that Word of YAH and that is when we must fall upon the Rock.

————

Happy shall he be, that takes and dashes את eth-your little ones against the stones.

TEHILLIYM (PSALMS) 137:9

————

You see, this is for you to be able to receive the Word of YAH and receive that ResTORAHation strength within your Being..

Oh, I know you want to become air born again like you once was and we must allow the RUACH HAQODESH (The Set-Apart) to remove our damage fathers…..

All the damages that the Storms of Life has attached to us so we can be Restored!

———

Who satisfies your mouth with good things; so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

TEHILLIYM (PSALMS) 103:5

————

You may have lost your vision and can’t seem to see what Path you need to take. You feel lost and afraid, but if we as the Eagle that looked to the Sun, we must look to The “Son” YAHUSHA so tears can manifest and our vision be Restored as well.

————

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon EL-YAHUAH ELOHAYNU, until that he have mercy upon us.

TEHILLIYM (PSALMS) 123:2

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that guards the Torah, happy is he.

MISHLEI (PROVERBS) 29:18

————

You may not know where you stand…Or may not know where to stand as the Eagle, your talons are damaged. The Word of YAHUAH Says…

————

And YAHUAH said, Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand upon a rock:

SHEMOTH (EXODUS) 33:21

————

Beloved, there is Hope. His Name is YAHUSHA. He is our Rock. And if you have been grounded by the cares of this life or for any reason I encourage you to make it back to Your Rock.

————

He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

But they that wait upon YAHUAH shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 40:29-31

———

Here is a few facts about the Eagles abilities you may or may not know.

Unlike any bird that YAHUAH has created the Eagle has a locking mechanism in it’s shoulder blades that when he is air born all he has to do is lock those wings in place and he can catch the updraft of the air that lifts him high above any storm.

It is effortless for him to stay air born.

Unlike all the other birds that have to keep those wings working to stay in flight and usually have to weather the storms.

Also, the Eagles vision is so keen that it can see a object the size of a quarter a mile away.

Eagles prefers to eat Fresh Meat or Game.

They mate for life and will live and die on their own Rock.

Once again, for my last appeal to you, if you have found yourself like this eagle and have stopped soaring the Heavens/His Spirit [The RUACH HA’QODESH] and become grounded for any reason I encourage you

“Make it back to Your Rock”

YAHUSHA is waiting to Restore You as The Eagle.

Shalom!

Your Brother,

Gerald W Thomas

The Butterfly

The Butterfly

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly.

One day a small opening appeared and he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.

Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly by taking a pair of scissors and snipping off the remaining bit of the cocoon.

The butterfly then emerged easily, but it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.

Neither happened!

In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were YAHUAH’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life.

If YAHUAH allowed us to go through our life without any obstacles, it would cripple us.

We would not be as strong as we could have been. We could never fly.

The Starfish Story

The Starfish Story

Original Story by: Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, What are you doing?

The youth replied, Throwing starfish back into the ocean.

The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.

Son, the man said, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You cant make a difference!

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.

Then, smiling at the man, he said I made a difference for that one.

Who Is Santa Claus?

Who Is Santa Claus?

Many of today’s Christmas celebrations are rooted in pagan practices. And Santa isn’t an exception.

The winter solstice is a time to celebrate the return of the sun following the shortest day in the year. It’s no wonder the church adopted these holidays as the birth date of their Savior. But from ancient Celtic and Norse mythology we also enjoy such holiday traditions as holly and mistletoe (sacred to the druids), the yule log, and even Santa Claus in his aspects of Father Time, or Father Winter, or the Holly King as part of our Yule History.

The Pagan Origins:

We have to go back a bit find the pagan legend and myth associated with Santa.

One of the first places to start is with the Germanic people and the Norse God Odin.

The 13th Century Poetic Edda is a complication of stories and poems from Scandinavian history, some as early 985AD. In this work and from Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda we learn about Odin riding an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir, that can leap great distances. At Yule, Odin leads a great hunting party through the sky in celebration. This story gives rise to comparisons of Santa and his 8 reindeer flying through the sky.

In some traditions of Odin’s Yule time ride, children could place their boots near the chimney filled with treats for Sleipnir and Odin would reward them for their kindness with food, candy or gifts. The tradition still continues Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. In other Germanic countries the practice has been replaced with hanging stockings.

On the Celtic side, the origins of the Holly King are little dubious, but there are links to the Great Kings of Ireland and the legend of the Holly King. With going too far into the history of Ireland, Between 8000-7500 BCE the Ice bridge between Scotland and Ireland collapses. Tribes of around 50,000 to 60,000 hunter gatherers are now “trapped” in Ireland. The population dwindles to about 10,000 as animals and food run out sustaining themselves in a variety of methods, including the consumption of mildly poisonous Holly berries. Around 6500-5500 BCE the Cuilleain (“Holly” (holy) men step onto the scene. Also known as the “Shining Ones” of Wicklow Hills, these men save the dwindling population from barbarity and are the first priest kings to preach self-wisdom, organized religion for humanity and salvation. Through their efforts to save their people, some of these early Priest Kings sacrifice their lives in battle. From these early priest kings, the concept of the Holly King who saved his people from the depths of the winter ice is born.

Through these early mythical legends, The Holly King begins his battle with his twin brother the Oak King at the Summer Solstice. As the year is wanning the Holly King prevails and begins preparations to save and maintain his people through the cold winter. In order to accomplish his mission, he travels the land to hunt, fish and harvest. Transporting these life saving items in a wagon or sled pulled by eight deer. These ‘gifts’ of life are provided to all his people, and in exchange they provide care and comfort to his team of deer.

There is also suggestion that the 8 reindeer plays pagan significance. Just follow along here, it comes together in the end. Even in those ancient times the number 9 was an important spiritual number. 9 witches often made up a coven. 9 feet was the diameter of a perfect circle. And maybe that’s why “the whole 9 yards”; which refers to the 9 yards of material for a Great Kilt worn by many Celtic highlanders is so important. When we think of Santa we think of Santa and his 8 tiny reindeer. And most people focus on the 8 reindeer. Well now add Santa. 9 souls traveling through the winter sky to bring presents for the rebirth of the year. It’s a stretch, but there are those who believe this is where the 8 reindeer got their start.

The Holly King lived way up North, where he could survive in the cold during the reign of his brother in the spring and summer. The Oak King who needed the warmth to survive, lived in the warm forests in the south and falls into sleep while his brother of the cold reigns over the world during the fall and winter months.

Ancient pagan deities such as Befana (a gift-giving Roman goddess); the Holly King (a Celtic Winter god); and Thor and Tomte (Norse gods who, respectively, rode across the sky in a chariots drawn by goats and gave presents to children at the end of the year) have all fed into the Santa legend.

In many of these early pagan legends, presents are given to children or young families to represent abundance and fertility.

After all this is the time of the rebirth of the Sun. Presents were exchanged to honor that rebirth and to give wishes or hopes to the person receiving the gift for abundance and fertility in the coming year. Now don’t assume that ‘fertility’ means giving birth to a child. Remember these people had to live off the earth and the crops they grew. They didn’t have grocery stores on the corner to trot down to and buy food for their families. So in most cases the fertility was for the coming growing season.

Santa didn’t become a Christian figure until the 3rd century with Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. He lived on what is now the coast of Turkey. Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, AD which became a festive day to honor this Bishop and his life. It’s still a day recognized in many European countries as St. Nicholas Day. His parents died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus’ words to “sell what you own and give the money to the poor,” Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. Many stories are told of his generosity, and caring. Especially his protection and care of children. Because of his life work, he became synonymous with Santa Claus. Though many of the stories retold today cannot be verified and are likely just oral stories that were created to entertain children and to further incorporate pagan legends with Christian figures.

It’s impossible to point to the one real ‘first’ Santa, because Santa is a culmination of mythological legends and stories. But from many of the earliest pagan stories and legends we can find pieces of the Santa legend in our Celtic and Scandinavian mythologies.

The Evolution Of Santa:

Santa gets his name from Dutch legend in the form of Sinter Klaas or “Sinterklaas”. Historical documents suggest that Sinter was brought by settlers to New York in the 17th century. As early as 1773 the name appeared in the American press as “St. A Claus,” but it was the popular author Washington Irving who gave Americans their first detailed information about the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas. In his History of New York, published in 1809 under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, Irving described the arrival of the saint on horseback (unaccompanied by Black Peter) each Eve of Saint Nicholas.

This Dutch-American Saint Nick achieved his fully Americanized form in 1823 in the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas by writer Clement Clarke Moore. Moore included such details as the names of the reindeer; Santa Claus’s laughs, winks, and nods; and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred to as an elf, returns up the chimney. (Moore’s phrase “lays his finger aside of his nose” was drawn directly from Irving’s 1809 description.)

There are many Celtic scholars who point Santa’s beginnings to the Celtic Holly King, who has been depicted with a Holly wreath as a crown. Or as the Druid Holly King who wore holly in his hat. In both cases, the Holly King traditionally wore green garments with red accents. What else would a “holly” king wear.

His clothing seems to have changed color in the late 1800s when Santa started wearing the modern red. The Dutch “Sinterklaas” is an elderly, serious man with white hair and a long, full beard. He wears a long red cape over a traditional white bishop’s alb. Some point to the influence of the Catholic church and its attire for the different levels of the Priest Hierarchy for this color combination.

In the 1840s, an elf in Nordic folklore called “Tomte” or “Nisse” started to deliver the Christmas presents in Denmark. The Tomte was portrayed as a short, bearded man dressed in gray clothes and a red hat. As migrations of people traveled through Scandinavia their traditional influences also began to merge. By the end of the 19th Century, Norway and Sweden had also began integrating these images into their winter cultural celebrations. Most notably replacing the Yule Goat, who brought presents with the Dutch influenced Sinterklaas.

British and Dutch versions of the gift-giver merged even more as migrations from Europe came to the Americas. “Santa Claus” by name, was first used in the American press in 1773, but he had lost his bishop’s apparel, and was at first pictured as a thick-bellied Dutch sailor with a pipe in a green winter coat. The influence of Scandinavian cultures continued as “A New-year’s present, to the little ones from five to twelve” is published in New York in 1821. In this little seasonal book, an anonymous poem “Old Santeclaus” is described as an old man on a reindeer sleigh, bringing presents to children. Later in 1823, The Sentinel in Troy New York prints “A Visit From St. Nicholas”, better known today as “The Night Before Christmas”. In this poem and story Santa is still a small old elf and the original reindeer were named Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder and Blixem (Dunder and Blixem came from the old Dutch words for thunder and lightning, which were later changed to the more German sounding Donner and Blitzen).

One of the first modern images of Santa came in 1863 by American cartoonist Thomas Nast for Harper’s Weekly. In 1869 a color collection of Nast’s pictures were published in which Santa appears in a red suit. This collection included a poem by George Webster “Santa Claus and His Works”, which places Santa’s home near the North Pole in the ice and snow. Images of Santa in red became more popular in the large cities of the east and midwest, but it still hadn’t caught on throughout the rural countryside or even around the world.

By the 1900s additional images depicting Santa in a red suit sprang up each season furthering the image around the country.

Regional images however still held onto old cultural traditions. This was especially true throughout Europe. It wasn’t until the Coca-Cola Company commissioned Michigan-born illustrator Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus in 1930, that his image began it’s world wide view as we know it today. Even though Sundblom didn’t invent the image of Santa in a red coat, their advertising strongly helped emphasize this image into rural American and around the world. Like Nast before him, Sundblom made his version a human-sized version of Santa Claus, rather than the elf of Moore’s poem. [Coke Lore & Santa History]. In modern versions of the Santa Claus legend, only his toy-shop workers are elves.

The Big Lie – Propaganda Principle #1

The Big Lie – Propaganda Principle #1

George Paine

Monday March 25, 2019

Always choose the big lie over the small; the masses will believe it more readily.

INTRODUCTION TO PROPAGANDA

Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident they are acting on their own free will.  Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda [1]

People cannot accept that propaganda works when they cannot accept that propaganda works on them.

To believe yourself above the influence of propaganda, is to become more susceptible to propaganda. [2]

One must become aware of propaganda, its limitations, its strengths, its influence, and its persuasive qualities,
if one is to master it. To say that one is free of the influence of propaganda is a sure sign of its pervasive existence in society. [2]

The nine principles of propaganda support each other synergistically. Rarely, if ever, will any single principle appear in isolation.

THE ORDINARY LIE, THE BIG LIE

Everyone lies. Everyone. We tell ourselves and others small lies. As highly social creatures we learn that others also tell similar small lies. We learn to tell lies, to hear lies and to watch for the lies of others. But we are not prepared to tell big lies or to recognize big lies when we encounter them.

We lack the audacity to tell big lies, the expectation that others will believe them, and the ability to imagine ourselves getting away with it. This is normal. Such lack of audacity and fear of retribution is a sign of our normality. It is also a chink in our armor.

The big lie blows right through all our ordinary psychological defenses against the ordinary little lie. We cannot believe that someone would be so audacious and fearless as to say what they just said if it were not true. Therefore their lie must be true. Even if not completely true, it must have some basis in fact, for “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

We fail to recognize that their audacity and fearlessness are defects, that such liars are damaged human beings. Rather, we grudgingly admire them, mistaking their audacity and fearlessness for independence and courage. We envy their fearlessness.

But neuroscientists are now focusing on the role of the brain’s amygdala in generating our normal feelings of fear.

Fear serves a distinct purpose; it alerts us of threats to our survival. Evolutionary success is all about surviving and leaving offspring.

Animals lacking fear take unnecessary risks, die young and leave fewer offspring. Our fearful ancestors avoided danger, produced more offspring and here we are, highly social animals capable of lying and detecting lies, and feeling fear, courage, admiration and envy. Necessary, yet insufficient, social qualities. They leave a gap for those who – lacking a properly functioning and communicating amygdala – are unconscionable and fearless liars. Through the vagaries of birth, genes, or environment, they appear and they succeed by, in effect, preying on the rest of us.

ADOLF HITLER CREATES THE CONCEPT OF GROSSE LÜGE, THE “BIG LIE.”

“All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.

Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.”

—  Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X, James Murphy Translation [3][4][5]

Lead Page of OSS Psychological Analysis of Adolf Hitler (CIA.com public document)

The phrase “big lie” was also used in a report prepared during the war by the United States Office of Strategic Services (predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency) in describing Hitler’s psychological profile.

“His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.”

—  OSS Archives – A Psychological Analysis of Adolf Hitler:  His Life and Legend, by Walter C. Langer, with collaboration by Henry Murray, Ernst Kris and Bertram Lewin. [6]

TECHNIQUES SUPPORTING THE BIG LIE (FROM PROPAGANDA TECHNIQUES)

The more outrageous the lie, the more weight it will carry.

Strongly assert the lie.

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Massage available data to “prove” the lie as being true.

Reframe their vigorous denial as proof of guilt.

Accuse those about whom you lie of lying about you.

Spread “peremptory lies” to discredit others before they have a chance to defend themselves or accuse you.

Be first to throw the mud; it will stick.

Always accuse, never doubt, never admit to lying or error. Many people remember and continue to believe your false charges because “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” When presented with proof of falsehood, many people quickly believe the initial lie even more strongly.

Many conspiracy theorists, proud of their own “skepticism,” which is actually “denialism,” accept low-probability unsupported big lies while rejecting high-probability supported facts.

THE BIG LIE IN PRACTICE

“Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.” — Attributed to Adolf Hitler [1]

“…the rabid, impudent bias and persistence with which this lie was expressed took into account the emotional, always extreme, attitude of the great masses and for this reason was believed. — Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, Volume I, Chapter VI [7]

“I volunteered at the al-Addan hospital. While I was there, I saw the Iraqi soldiers come into the hospital with guns, and go into the room where . . . babies were in incubators. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” — Joseph Goebbels [1]

An ‘extremely credible source’ has called my office and told me that @BarackObama‘s birth certificate is a fraud. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) 8-6-12 [9]

In 2016 Trump changes his story without apology or admission of his own errors and lies

“President Barack Obama was born in the United States, Period.” — After Washington D.C. campaign event, 9-16-16 [9]

But Trump can’t end a five-year-long series of lies without at least one additional lie

“Hillary Clinton and her campaign of 2008, started the birther controversy. I finished it.” — Same news conference 9-16-16 [10]

Politifact.com proves Trump’s last statement to be false.

“False. There is no evidence to support [Trump’s) claim [that Hillary Clinton or anyone in her campaign had anything to do with the birther controversy].” — Politifact’s Truth-O-meter, 9-16-16 [11]

“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.” — Donald Trump, Candidacy announcement 6-16-15 http://insider.foxnews.com/2015/06/16/watch-highlights-donald-trumps-2016-announcement-ill-build-border-wall-and-mexico-will

“In Europe, pictures like this are very fashionable and common.” — Donald Trump, on Melania’s nude photos – New York Post, 7-31-16  http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00099502.html

“The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.” — George W. Bush, State of the Union Speech, January, 2003 [12] [Known to be untrue by the administration at the time, they later acknowledged that these “16 words” should not have been in the speech.] http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/07/11/sprj.irq.wmdspeech/

“No collusion!” — Donald Trump, an uncountable number of times, across all media

“Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel.” — Matthew 23:24 New King James Version

1 The numerous on-line sources for quotes (AZQuotes.com, etc.) rarely properly cite the source (written source, date & location for spoken source). Quotes ascribed to Nazis such as Hitler and Goebbels – now numbering into the millions on the web – sound like something they might have said, but they don’t provide proper citations. Despite this, such quotes are often succinct compressions of the alleged speaker’s actual sentiments, expressed elsewhere less concisely.

THE SEVEN REASONS WE OBEY AUTHORITY

THE SEVEN REASONS WE OBEY AUTHORITY

September 2, 2020

Phillip Schneider, Staff Writer

Waking Times

Rebels are a very important part of society, but they rarely get the recognition they deserve. They help us break through old norms and keep us from falling into groupthink. However, human nature urges most of us to remain in our comfort zone even when it means less freedom or more difficult problems down the road.

Why is it the case that so many people ignore the outside world or pass it off as somebody else’s problem until it reaches their own doorstep? In a recent video, Brittany Sellner (Brittany Pettibone before she married) describes the seven reasons men obey authority, even when it is against their best interest.

#1 Habit

“As everybody knows, habits are extremely difficult to break and even if we have gripes about the state of things, accepting our imperfect reality seems better to us than taking on the daunting prospect of change. Conversely… habit ceases to be a reason for obedience in times of political crisis; kind of similar to what we are experiencing now as a consequence of Covid. Despite many of us not wanting to alter our habits, our habits were forcibly altered for us.”

#2 Moral Obligation

“The second reason for obedience is moral obligation which is obviously a motive that is very often found in religion, but politically speaking… some see it as a moral obligation to ‘1) obey for the good of society,’ 2) ‘due to the ruler having superhuman factors such as being a supernatural being or a deity,’ which isn’t something that I think applies to too many Americans… 3) People see it as a moral obligation to obey because they ‘perceive the command as being legitimate, owing to its source an issuer’. For example, a mayor or a police officer [would be considered under this reason], and 4) People see it as a moral obligation to obey due to ‘conformity of commands to accepted norms.’ For example, most people believe that a command such as not committing murder is a moral command and therefore, they obey it.”

#3 Self-Interest

“The third reason for obedience is self-interest and this is perhaps one of the more common motives nowadays. For example, most big corporations are immoral and seek to piggy-back off of current social and political trends in order to gain money, status, and approval. Just look at all the corporations that suddenly became ‘champions of social justice’ after the death of George Floyd; none of them gave a crap about police brutality and Black Lives Matter until it became in their interest to care.

This self-interest can of course also extend to individuals. Famous and non-famous people have a lot to gain by falling in line, or… there is also a negative self-interest wherein the person doesn’t obey simply because they’re going to gain something but so they won’t lose everything: their reputations, jobs, social standing and future career prospects.”

#4 Psychological Identification with the Ruler

“The fourth reason for obedience is psychological identification with the ruler, meaning that people have a close emotional connection with the ruler, regime, or the system. I imagine you would have encountered a lot of this in, for example, Communist Russia or Nazi Germany.”

#5 Zones of Indifference

“The fifth reason for obedience is an extremely common one today and that is ‘zones of indifference,’ meaning that even if people are not fully satisfied with the state of things, they have a margin of indifference or a margin of tolerance for the negative aspects of their society and government.”

#6 Fear of Sanctions

“The sixth reason for obedience is the most obvious reason… and that is ‘fear of sanctions,’ which generally involve the threat or the use of some form of physical violence against the disobedient subject and induce obedience by power merely coercive, a power really operating on people simply through their fears.”

#7 Absence of Self Confidence

“Lastly, the seventh and final reason for obedience is the absence of self confidence among subjects, meaning that many people simply don’t have sufficient confidence in themselves, their judgement, and their capacities to make themselves capable of disobedience and resistance.

Thanks to the internet, I observe this motive quite often. Thousands of people decry on the daily that they’re miserable with the state of things and yet they do nothing because they have no confidence in their personal ability to lead, to organize a peaceful protest, to start a movement and so on.”

Although authority can be legitimate and meaningful, resistance to unnecessary acts of violence or draconian government injustice is often better for the individual and his society and shows greater character than inaction. Although this is certainly not a comprehensive list, perhaps it will help you to better understand your own role in life and greater society.
